High quality delivery of English and maths programmes is essential for learners and employers. This guide sets out the key issues that all providers need to consider. The environment, in which English and maths programmes are delivered, is changing all the time, particularly in relation to GCSEs qualifications.

All providers need to understand the changing environment and adapt their delivery as appropriate. The provision of English and maths is central to the Government’s recent reforms to post-16 education and training, with a focus on those aged 16-19 achieving GCSE grades A*-C in these subjects. Potentially, this increase in emphasis on English and maths will have a significant impact on the further education (FE) sector; some of the issues involved will be explored in this guide. This guide should be used as a companion in tandem with AELP’s original publication Moving from Key Skills to Functional Skills will help you review the issues and set out a clear plan as to how to approach the new challenges.

As always, AELP welcomes feedback on our guides as this will help us establish what further support AELP and the Foundation can provide in the future. Download guide here…
